An interview with Jacquelyn Thorp by JD Walkaway - HR Squad
JD: I understand you were recently awarded the Human Resource Excellence award by PIHRA. Exactly what is it?
JT: The HR Excellence Award was a huge surprise. Each year PIHRA presents this award to some very knowledgeable and expert people in the world of HR. I am very proud to be among them, including Mery Propster, Pamela Winters, Barry Nadel, Mike Deblieux - all people that admire.
JD: Well, congratulations. Why was it a surprise?
JT: I thought it had to be awarded to a practicing Human Resource Manager. Because I own HR Coach I thought I was not eligible.
JD: You also received the Volunteer of the Year Award. What is the difference?
JT: The Volunteer of the Year is a completely different award and it would have been enough to make my day! The volunteer award recognizes your volunteer service to the HR community. The HR Excellence Award recognizes your knowledge, achievements, education, talents, experience, etc. in the field of Human Resource Management.
JD: So, what makes you tick? You train people in using their strengths, what are yours?
JT: Good question! I love Marcus Buckingham's Strength Builder. The first book I read of his was First Break All the Rules and I am currently reading his new book. The process begins with taking a week and identifying four things that make you feel strong. I was a little surprised. The first thing that really makes me feel strong is being with my family. I mean I knew that but I did not know it would show up in a management exercise. The other things that make me feel strong are my clients, new clients and reaching people. By reaching people I mean teaching a class on harassment prevention and seeing the faces of the people that get it.
